Every year I create a tarot card, for a deck that I am a part of. When I began working on this owl painting I had just been given the lovers card of a mythology deck to create. Originally it was handed to me because my daughter is gay, and they thought it would be wonderful to have a card that represented her in the deck. She really is an amazing person. So Athena and Aphrodite were the gods chosen for that card.
The trick with tarot is that nothing actually means what the title says it does. Lovers are not completely about physical love or love for another. It's also about the inward journey of who we are, and the impact our choices have on ourselves and others. The more I read about the card, the more I realized there were things I wanted to say to her. Things I needed her to hear and take to heart as she stepped into adulthood and being on her own in the world.
Life is all about balance and finding out exactly where your moral compass lays, and what you stand for. It's figuring out who you are and what you believe in. With every choice made, there is a right and a wrong way to go about things. Too many wrong choices can lead to heartache, sadness, despair, depression. Basically a ton of bad things. But if you learn what is right, what does the most good, you can live a much more fulfilling life. Sometimes it's not about what makes you feel good in the moment either, because doing the right thing isn't always an easy thing to do. But this isn't about instant gratification, this is about who you are now, and the groundwork for who you will be in the future. There will be many, many more crossroads ahead of you and this is where you start shaping who you are.
I chose my symbols carefully to keep true with the card, but also emphasize the inner search for your own philosophy of life. Athena and Aphrodite became two sides of the same coin, representing the opposite philosophies that are present in every person, including my daughter. I did my best to express to her my wishes for her, in a piece of art that will be with her when I am gone.
You may be wondering what this has to do with an owl band on Zox, all this talk about tarot. Well, when I finished the card I realized I felt unsatisfied. I felt like I hadn't given her enough guidance, not just with this card, but through her life. To be honest, as a mom? I don't know what I'm doing. She was my first child and I had no idea what to do to teach her or make sure she had the best life and became the best person she could be. I was just winging it, as all parents are.
The owl means so many things. In the card, it was the embodiment of the here and now, the representation of the tangible and physical. More importantly, it represented the wisdom of Athena. It represented the gift of communication, one of the greatest gifts any leader should have. Civil discourse and negotiation are one of the biggest keys to any relationship, be it lovers, friends, colleagues... or simply understanding yourself. And more than anything I wanted to say that to her. I wanted her to really see that I was rooting for her, and she was capable of incredible things.
So I repainted the owl on its own, to tell her a single thing. Seek wisdom in your life, and in your actions. You are the only person who will be with you every single day of your life. Make sure you're someone you want to be with.
