Story
Well, my friends - we've made it to the very last full week of Monster Month. I'm a bit sad that it's ending, but at the same time I am just so grateful for the love you all have shown this project. As I think about it, the lasting impact of these monsters are something I'm really proud of. Let me explain:
When Darren first set out to do this, he sat in our office for days just doodling different creatures. Each day, we'd review them together and see which ones we were most excited about. What I loved about that process, and the subsequent story writing that followed, was that every one of them was unique in its own right. They all had things that made them special, both in the way they looked and in their story. That led me to a bit of a revelation:
That's us.
While each of the creatures all looked incredibly different, their story is how we perceived who they really were and what they were about. That's where their true character came through, and it's what really made me happy about everything we did here.
I think there are a lot of us who feel like we don't fit in. We don't look like the instagram models, we're not as well-off as our neighbors, our families might be a bit dysfunctional or we're dealing with some internal things right now that we feel make us seem like we're not quite good enough.
That's the beauty of being human - we don't have to be good enough to measure up to the standards of anyone else. Our stories are our own and that's what makes them so wonderful. My hope for this entire month is that you've seen how even though each of the monsters we've released have been substantially different, the thing we love the most about them is that they're relatable - their stories make us smile because we either know someone like them or feel the same way ourselves. While they started off as a cute project, where they left us is (hopefully) at a place where we can look at ourselves in the mirror and smile again. Our story doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be our own.
Big Hugs,
- Jason

I used to have monsters hiding under my bed, but I soon came to see they were all in my head. Now I'm grown up, and the monsters have changed. They don't have 6 arms, or long scary fangs. These days I'm wiser, I know how to react. When ghoulies rear their heads, this plan I enact: I don't shake, I don't hide. I don't even frown. I just scream at them RAAAAAR!!! And the monsters back down.
