This Affirmation hits very close to home for me. I was raised in a pretty conservative and traditional family. My father was a high ranking officer in the United States Air Force, from a large military family. My mother was a very accomplished professional in the medical industry, also from a large conservative family. I was expected to either follow in my father’s footsteps with a military career or to pursue a high level stem degree and become a doctor or engineer or something similar. I was to become something my parents could be proud of.
In high school, I was sent to a JROTC private school to start me on my path. In addition to the traditional high school curriculum, I learned about strategy, respect, and how to be a leader. By the time I graduated I had risen through the ranks to become one of the leaders of the student body. With my stellar grades, high SAT score, years in JROTC and mandatory extra-curricular I was well positioned to go to almost any college I wanted. When I got my acceptance letters I chose to pursue an Electrical Engineering degree at Virginia Tech, with my parents’ guidance of course.
I hated it. I remember sitting in my linear algebra class, working on one of those equations that take half an hour to solve, thinking to myself “is this what I want to do with my life?” Heck no, but what else should I do?
Well, funny I should ask. While I was busy being groomed for my future I had taken up an unusual hobby for a guy, and I was good at it. I had always been interested in fashion, so I asked my girlfriend’s mom, a master seamstress, to show me how to use a sewing machine. It changed my life.
Needless to say when I told my parents that I wanted to drop out of engineering and pursue a degree in fashion design, it didn’t go over well. Luckily, my military school preparation had also given me confidence and independence, so I went ahead and did it without their blessing. I applied to schools, secured financial aid, worked 3 jobs and finally earned my degree, magna cum laude.
I was hired by a design firm before I even graduated and started designing apparel professionally. It's been almost 20 years now and I haven’t regretted my decision once. I've been fortunate enough to work for some really great companies. I’ve learned a ton and I have been happy almost every day of my life doing what I love. Now I’m working for one of the coolest companies I could possible hope for. That’s right guys, Zox is an amazing place full of awesome people. I’m where I belong.
My hope for you is that you will pursue your passions and your dreams - when we do what we love the results speak for themselves. We live feeling fulfilled and content, and we regret nothing. So look into your heart, find the things that drive you to the core, and do those things. Pour your passion into them. Do what you love and success will follow.
What are Affirmations?
These beauties are a new way to share positive little reminders around your home. Each print is actually two unique designs pressed together. Just like our Straps, these are completely reversible.
On the front : Some of our favorites words that help us make each day a bit better.
On the back: an encouraging phrase or question to remind you that today is your day.
Each Affirmation is printed on a high quality 9"x12" cardstock that looks great whether it's in a frame, taped to your bathroom mirror or hung with magnets on the fridge. The idea is to put them in a place you visit often so you'll get that little boost of confidence when you need it most.
